The song
You can use any version of the song that best suits your pupils and below are a few versions that we have found. The Charanga and Sing Up links also contain further resources but you will need to have a subscription to these services to use them.
Preparing for your performance
Join Kristian Parkes from Charanga for a webinar at 11.00am-11.30am on Friday 21 June to help you learn and refine the song for your performance in the afternoon.
The session can be accessed via this link:

Contact your local Music Service to book a music tutor to come into school for the day to explore learning the song, drumming patterns or other musical exploration. Each service has a dedicated team of tutors who would love to come and work with your pupils.

How can we perform the song?
In any way that works for your school community and pupils!
- Perform the song in your classrooms, or together in the hall or on playground
- Make a school band to play the song
- Take the performance out into your local community
- Create a flash-mob performance somewhere in school
- Invite parents in for the end of the day to join in your performance
- Ask visiting music tutors to use the song with pupils in their music lessons
Take a look at the performance Fawbert and Barnard’s Primary school in Harlow created when they invited parents and pupils to perform together for inspiration!
What else could we do to celebrate World Music Day with ‘Lean on me’?
- Create a rap-break for the song
- Make some paper dolls holding hands to represent the pupils in your school standing together
- Change the lyrics in the ‘Just call on me brother’ section to reflect your school values
- The song uses scale-movement (moving by step). Take this motif to create your own compositions using scales
- Listen to different versions of the song. Which is your favourite?
We are already busy on that day/time – can we still join in? – of course! Perform the song at a time that works for your school and let us know so that we can celebrate with you!
