Open Day and Free Come and Sing in Saffron Hall!

• Saturday 21 June will see our open day for all interested young musicians aged 4 to 18.
• This will include a free Come and Sing in Saffron Hall, aimed at the younger musician.
• Bring your instrument or voice and see what a Saturday morning is like at SCYM!

Summer Jazz Course with Gareth Lumbers and Charlie Bates

• This summer sees the return of the popular jazz holiday course with Gareth Lumbers and Charlie Bates, which is open to all young jazz musicians.

Essex Youth Orchestra, Essex Young People’s Orchestra & Essex Youth String Octet in concert!

Come and hear EYPO perform a great programme of Film Music and popular classics followed by EYO performing Shostakovich’s Symphony No.11 in G minor, Op.103 (‘The Year 1905’), and Smetana’s epic piece Vltava (The Moldau) from Má vlast. 

This concert will also feature the talented players of the Essex Youth String Octet performing a new piece by the Octet’s violinist, Isabella Patrick called Waves.

Hear our award-winning Youth Jazz Orchestra in concert!

Led by resident director, Martin Hathaway, the young musicians are excited to share new music with an audience and show that live music has well and truly returned to Essex.

Formed in 1991, the Essex Youth Jazz Orchestra (EYJO) will perform under the direction of Martin Hathaway, one of the country’s leading jazz musicians.

Conducted by Robin Browning and Jane Hammond, this concert will feature Nielsen’s Aladdin Suite, Shostakovich’s Jazz Suite No. 2 and Giacchino’s Star Trek Suite: Into Darkness and Beyond.

The orchestra will also be performing a new piece by composer, Atharv Gupta. Atharv who plays trombone in Essex Youth Orchestra and is Assistant Conductor for Essex Young People’s Orchestra, is also establishing himself as composer of renown, having already won national prizes including BBC Young Composer Award in 2023.

Previous concerts have always been a great success with the young musicians performing to a Cathedral full of families, friends and the general public.
