Essex Youth Jazz Quintet perform as part of South Hanningfield’s exciting Jubilee celebrations full of fun for all the family

Savour Summer sounds at Saffron Hall

Hear popular classical music performed by the Essex Youth Orchestra and also Essex Young People’s Orchestra for free.

Enjoy an evening of great orchestral classics performed by the Essex Youth Orchestra and Essex Young People’s Orchestra, including Stravinsky’s Firebird, Bizet’s Carmen Suites and Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story.

In addition, this evening will host the premiere of Essex born composer, Chester Tribley’s new work Restoration, which was commissioned by Essex County Council and the Essex Climate Action Commission.

Mayor of Chelmsford said on Twitter “I could not get enough of the brilliant Essex Youth at the Chelmer Bridge Chelmsford Rotary Concert in Chelmsford Cathedral. From improvisation to Swan Lake, there was something for every appetite!”

I happened by chance to go into the cathedral in Chelmsford and caught the youth orchestra practising. I was blown away after hearing them play after never been interested in classical music. I’m now wondering when and where they will be next playing so I can begin my journey on the classical music adventure.” said Freda Longhurst.

Jazz Hands for young musicians in concert!

Hear the Essex Youth Jazz Orchestra & Young Essex Jazz in concert for free!

Led by resident director, Martin Hathaway, the young musicians are excited to share new music with an audience and show that live music has well and truly returned to Essex.

Formed in 1991, the Essex Youth Jazz Orchestra (EYJO) will return to performing around the County under its director, Martin Hathaway, one of the countries leading jazz musicians.

Also performing at this concert will be the very young musicians from the Young Essex Jazz group, led by Paul Moylan. (Once students have gained a little more experience and developed improvisation skills, they will progress onto EYJO.)

As Beverley Heard, Ensembles Officer said: “I am overwhelmed by the enthusiasm of the young musicians to get back to playing together after such a long break.  We had record numbers auditioning for our Jazz programme this year and some real emerging talent will be heard at this concert”.

Musicircus in Colchester

Musicircus will immerse Colchester in a crescendo of sound!

Colchester will host an inspirational and ground-breaking concept in music performance this summer. The first event of its kind in Essex, on 12th June Colchester Musicircus will bring together musical artists in an incredible collaboration that is free for the whole community to enjoy.

Live music will be heard from the Castle Park to Culver Square on 12 June 2022.

Colchester Musicircus is partnering with Essex Music Service, inviting musical performers of all genres, ages and experience to participate in this unique event. The innovation of Colchester Musicircus is that it creates one platform for all of these artists to perform together on one ‘stage’, meaning that young talent can stand side by side with some of the most experienced local musicians.

London Philharmonic Orchestra Junior Artists 2022-2023

LPO Junior Artists 2022/23 applications are now open!

The programme LPO Junior Artists is a free, year-long orchestral experience programme for talented young musicians from backgrounds currently under-represented in UK professional orchestras.  Junior Artists take part in 8 individual sessions with a mentor from the LPO, and a range of activity including performances, mock auditions, workshops and discussions, and inspire younger students through our LPO Junior Artists: Overture strand.

Application details In brief, applicants need to:

  • be aged 15 – 18 on 1 September 2022
  • play an orchestral instrument at a minimum standard of Grade 8 (not including piano)
  • be from a background currently under-represented in professional UK orchestras

LPO Showcase: Our Junior Artists are giving a free performance on the Royal Festival Hall stage at 6.00pm on Wednesday 13 April, alongside LPO musicians and Foyle Future Firsts, conducted by Gabriella Teychenné.  The programme will include music by Delius, Bartók and Bizet, and the premiere of a new work by Geoffrey King. No tickets required. Anyone interested in applying for LPO Junior Artists 2022/23 is encouraged to come along and talk to the team at the end of the performance about the Junior Artists programme.

Mendelssohn’s Elijah in Ely Cathedral

Essex Youth Choir sings Mendelssohn’s Elijah with Gabrieli Roar!

Gabrieli returns to Ely Cathedral to perform Mendelssohn’s Elijah, marking 10 years since the release of their award winning recording of this magnificent piece.

Over 200 young singers from across the country take to the stage alongside world-class period instrumentalists and singers, and renowned soloists. This performance is the culmination of an intensive five day residential course where Gabrieli Chorus Directors and Vocal Coaches have been working alongside partner choirs and singers to bring together this epic oratorio.

Led by Gabrieli’s Artistic Director, Paul McCreesh, Elijah promises an inspirational and uplifting evening of some of the most glorious music in the classical canon.

Free Easter egg-cellent Wind Band concert

Essex Youth Symphonic Wind Orchestra presents its free concert after a holiday music course.

The concert’s programme will be a mix of musical styles from classical pieces to film and popular music arrangements, including pieces by John Williams, Paul Hart, Vaughan Williams and Shostakovich. The Wind Orchestra is directed by its resident conductor, David Rowland.
