KS3 Endangered Instrument Programme (2025-26)
KS3 Group Instrumental Learning Scheme
Following on from Play-It at KS2, our KS3 scheme is aimed at Year 7 students. Funded through grant funding from the Greater Essex Music Hub, we offer 12 students the opportunity to learn an instrument in small groups over two terms.
Students are selected by their music teacher or can self-nominate. They must be in Year 7 and show a desire or aptitude for learning an instrument. Lessons are delivered in groups of three, lasting 30 minutes each week to ensure meaningful engagement and progress.
Instruments offered:
- Trumpet
- Trombone
- Flute
- Clarinet
- Oboe
- Bassoon
- Saxophone
- Violin
- Cello
Schools should limit choices based on available tutors. Pairing similar instruments (e.g. flute and clarinet) may be possible. For other instrument requests, contact: sally.thomson@essex.gov.uk.
Tuition Details
Selected students receive free instrument hire for two terms and are expected to practise weekly. Parents must sign hire agreements and support their child’s learning. A customisable parent letter will be provided. Excellent attendance is essential.
The Music Service provides a tutor for two hours per week starting January 2026. Schools may expand the scheme by investing further to include more students.
In term two, schools must organise an ensemble for participating students. This can be a new or existing group. Music Service tutors can be hired at £39/hour if needed. Ensembles can be shorter than an hour.
Third Term
After two funded terms, students can continue in groups (£65/term) or individually (£97.50/term). Instrument hire remains free for this term. Afterward, parents must arrange hire or purchase.
School Responsibilities
- Provide a suitable space for lessons.
- Select 12 committed students (not for whole year group taster sessions).
- Ensure students are not already learning another instrument unless in rare circumstances you think a student can cope and is likely to continue with the scheme in term three.
- Secure parental support and signed agreements.
- Monitor attendance and progress.
- Provide an ensemble in term two.
- Keep records and report to the Music Service.
- Liaise with the Music Service tutors to support student progress.
