Music lessons in school

Electronic drum kit learner

Individual instrumental learning in 1-to-1, or groups of two or three.

Essex Music Service continues to work in partnership with schools and educational settings across our county to promote high quality music education through instrumental and vocal teaching.

Weekly lessons are tailored to meet the needs, aspirations and interests of all young people and can be provided on an individual or paired basis, delivering traditional music provision for 21st Century students.

Essex Music Service:

  • works in partnership with each school to support you with the timetabling of lessons so that the timetables reflect your school needs
  • has over 200 experienced specialist music tutors who are all covered by the ESCB Level 2 safeguarding training, yearly CPD training, and regular quality assurance as part of our ongoing support and development programme for staff

Our discount scheme for young people supports them in accessing our services. Find out more about our Financial Assistance.

A parent’s guide to music lessons

To support parents and students new to music lessons, or to help provide support for those already having lessons, the Music Service has a Parent’s Guide to Music Lessons.

The guide covers:

  • costs of music lessons
  • how to book your music lessons
  • music-making and -learning in school
  • music-making and -learning outside of school
  • ensemble music
  • Community Music Venues
  • what happens in a music lesson
  • who will be teaching your child
  • how to help your child practise
  • tips for parents

We hope that this guide will help parents understand what music provision looks like, and how best to support their child in their musical development.

We also have a support page for parents and students that includes a glossary and explanation of musical terms, and a simple guide to music theory to support learning. Find out more about musical terms.
